James O'BrienBorn and raised in Belleville Ontario, Jim O'Brien received his B.A. from St. Patrick's College in Ottawa and his LL.B. from the University of Ottawa in 1969. After articling in Toronto, Jim has practiced law in his hometown since 1971. He is currently a partner at the firm of Reynolds O'Brien LLP where he enjoys a general practice focused on property and business transactions and estate matters.

Jim has studied, lectured and assisted at workshops dealing with ADR since 1994 and has been a mediator of various types of disputes since 1996 under the name of "Civil Solutions." Preferring the interest-based model for negotiations, Jim often mediates in disputes outside of the areas in which he currently practices law. Jim's wife, Susan, has been a nurse and educator and has recently completed the ADR workshops at the Mediation Centre of Southeastern Ontario. Jim looks forward to Susan's involvement as an additional resource to his mediation practice in addition to her development of her own practice in mediation services.

A former Executive member of the Ontario Bar Association from 1998-2003, including Vice-President, President and past-President, Jim remains active as chair of ALERT, the charitable trust of the OBA, and as a member of its governing council. He recently received the Distinguished Service award of the Ontario Bar Association. A past director of the Canadian Bar Association, Jim recently served for an extended term of 3 years on its Communications committee. He has served the Law Society of Upper Canada as a member of joint committees related to continuing education, paralegals and legal aid and as counsel to Complaints Review Officers.

He is a member, director and past-President of the Hastings Law Association; member and past director and past-President of the Quinte Estate Planning Council; member of the Legal Aid Area Committee for Hastings; and has been a member of various local civic, athletic and community committees and organizations for 30+ years.
