He is cross-appointed to the School of Environmental Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in environmental geography from the University of Toronto. His doctoral thesis analyzed the use of negotiation and mediation to resolve environmental disputes. John's core area of published research is conflict management in planning and land use. He maintains a small practice as an independent facilitator and mediator, primarily of planning, land use and transportation disputes. His largest case to date was the provision of facilitation services to a large number of parties embroiled in a high-profile and costly railway and land use dispute on Vancouver Island in 2002. In
addition to training as a mediator, John holds a Master of Science in
planning degree from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Science
in physical geography from the University of Western Ontario. He has extensive
university teaching experience in urban and regional planning, conflict
resolution, and resource and environmental geography. He has been an active
recreational pilot since 1987, when he received his Canadian Private Pilot
