Community Mediation: Principles and Practices
Community Mediation is a transformative-driven alternative to traditional problem-solving mediation that offers a new way to resolve conflicts before they get to the courts. Rooted in transformative principles emphasizing the recognition and empowerment of individuals and employing co-mediation, it can also strengthen the social fabric of neighbourhoods, affinity groups and communities by encouraging dialogue among citizens.
Participants will be engaged in two activity-based exercises – including a role-play employing two co-mediators assisting the resolution of a neighbourhood conflict.
Among those for whom the presentation is intended to be of interest are those involved in shaping or discharging public policy, neighbourhood leaders and members of community-based advocacy groups. |
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (with Break at 2:30 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.)

Organizational Conflict Resolution: Conflict Management Systems
Untold thousands of employees arrive at a job each day to work in an environment that makes them miserable. Is it the heavy workload, a mind-numbingly boring set of tasks, or the workplace environment that sends shivers up a worker’s spine? No it is not: It is a colleague, manager or client who is affecting their job satisfaction, productivity, morale and stress level. This interactive session aims to offer you the “a ha” moments that will help you understand and better influence your work environment or organization through a set of mini-exercises that will get you out of your seat and illustrating and working with various facilitated and mediated workplace conflict resolution options (the “Conflict Resolution Toolbox”). Your understanding of Organizational Conflict Management Systems will get you started on the prevention, analysis, management and resolution of conflict in any organizational setting, including the workplace. It includes plenty of group discussion and reflection on the process. |
