MCSO is pleased to announce the addition to our Roster of Sandra L. Howgate of Port Perry, Ontario. Sandra holds a degree in Conflict Resolution Studies from the University of Winnipeg, awarded with Distinction, and has had extensive experience over several years in the United Kingdom in providing both Conflict Resolution services and training and Mediation services in a variety of professional contexts. She is newly returned to Canada, and we are delighted to have Sandra as part of the MCSO Team.

MCSO establishes a Small Claims Court Mediation Service

This Service builds upon the experience with its predecessor, the Small Claims Court Project supervised by Professor Price, with the assistance of Volunteer Mediators, that operated in the Faculty of Law between 1997 and 2001 as part of the Queen’s Law Students Mediation Program. With the increased numbers of Roster Members that MCSO now has available, and the availability of a new Roster Member, Stephanie Goffin-Boyd, to serve as its Director, we are now able to initiate this new Service.

We see this as meeting a number of immediate needs. With the imminent increase of the monetary jurisdiction of the Small Claims Court from $ 10,000.00 to $ 25,000.00, it seems evident that there will be a greater demand for the Mediation alternative to proceeding to litigation. As well, MCSO is receiving an increasing number of requests for us to provide mentoring opportunities for persons completing MCSO’s 40-hour Certificate Program. Participating in Small Claims Court Mediations provides a vehicle for accessing those learning opportunities.

A full description of the Service appears on a new section of the MCSO web site.
